Welfare:

The term “social welfare” is usually used within the context of western industrial nations, while Muslim states are more frequently labeled “third world” or classified as “threshold countries”. Morocco falls into this last category. The current constitution defines the Moroccan system of rule as a constitutional, democratic and social monarchy and names Islam as the state religion.

There is indeed some degree of social welfare in modern Morocco, although this is largely limited by the nation's circumstances. State-supported social welfare measures such as social and health insurance are restricted to the relatively small circles of state and public service employees and employees in the official economy.

However, workers in agriculture and in the unofficial economy, both of which are important economic factors, fall outside this system.

Education:

Education in Morocco is free and compulsory through primary school.

School education

Primary education lasts for six years and, together with the first three years of secondary education, form basic education. After nine years' basic education, students enter general secondary education where they are offered three options: letters, sciences, or mathematics. Upon completion, they are awarded the Baccalauréat. They may also choose a technical path, leading to the Baccalauréat technique. Some technical schools offer two years' training after the Baccalauréat leading to the Brevet de Technicien supérieur (BTS).

Higher Education

Higher education is provided by universities, Grandes Ecoles, institutes, teacher-training schools and centers under the supervision of the Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur. A characteristic feature of training is the existence, besides the traditional system of higher education, of institutions of higher education (Etablissements de Formation des Cadres) which provide specialized training for high-level personnel in Science, Technology, Law, Economics, Administration and Social Sciences and Teacher Training under the direct control of ministerial departments. There are also eight Grandes Ecoles d'Ingénieurs (engineering schools). University councils rule on important questions related to university life. Universities are public institutions with budgetary autonomy.

Religion:

The totally dominating religion of Morocco is Islam, in the Sunni variant. Islam in Morocco is by definition headed by the king. Islamic practices affect all aspects of life, especially in more remote communities. As in all Islamic communities the call to prayer will be heard several times a day.

During the holy month of Ramadan (which takes place at a different time each year), Moslems fast from daybreak till sunset. This fast puts a great strain on them as they will often rise at 4am to have breakfast. In towns some shops in the Ramadan month are closed for long periods during daylight hours and also at dusk many shops close for an hour while the fasting population has their meal.

Woman are relatively free in Morocco, most walk around without veils and take part in all aspects of life.

Next to importance among religions in Morocco is Christianity. As the second largest religion in the country, Christianity has as many as 100,000 followers. Christians in Morocco are either immigrants or descended directly from the French invaders and settlers in early times.

Judaism is yet another important religious belief in Morocco, with a handful of only 5,000 supporters. People belonging to this religion concentrate mainly in cities like Marrakech and Casablanca. However, their total count is decreasing quite fast and heading towards potential extinction.
